Areas of clay are removed and replaced with a different color clay. The edge spots on the chip are made from the same material as the rest of the chip. Caulk and sand were added to the clay, and the modern composite chip evolved. It was not until the 1950s that other materials started to be used. In the 1880s, companies began producing uniform size clay tokens using a compression mold technique. Upscale gambling houses had tokens made from bone or ivory, which could be easily forged. The casino or poker chip was designed to bring standardization to the betting process. Early gamblers used coins, nuggets, or pieces of gold and silver, paper money, or tokens.
